Describes the conquest of the land of Canaan and its parceling among the 12 tribes of Israel.

    • Named after the “judges” of Israel. Judges were heroic leaders that arose from time to time to lead Israel as they encountered their enemies and as they needed direction. At this point in Israel’s history there was no earthly King or central government.
    • This book covers a period of time from the death of Joshua to the birth of Samuel (last judge over Israel). Within this book we find the recorded events of Judges such as Deborah, Gideon, Samson and other Bible heroes as they fought Israel’s national enemies.

    • The book of Ruth is a picture of a more nobler side of Hebrew life during the time of the judges. The story of Ruth, the Moabite, and her loyalty and devotion to Naomi, her Hebrew mother-in-law presents the beauty of giving one’s self to God.
    • Ruth, who was from the Gentile nation of Moab, chooses to serve the God of Israel and becomes the great-grandmother of King David.

    • These books are both named after Samuel, last judge over Israel. He is the principle figure of these books. Within these writings we find the anointing of Saul, Israel’s first king.
    • Herein we also find Saul’s downfall as he disobeyed God and the subsequent anointment of King David. It is also here that we find the account of Israel’s transition from judges to a monarchy. The history of David is given and the grandeur of Israel during his time.

    • Herein we find recorded the decline of David’s great empire as the kingdom divided. These two books cover some 400 years of history.

    • These two books are a supplement to the books of Samuel and Kings. Much of the contents of these books are a duplicate account of the events in the preceding 4 books. I Chronicles parallels 2 Samuel and discusses the reign of David and preparations for building the temple.
    • 2 Chronicles continues Israel’s history thru Solomon’s reign and focuses on the southern kingdom. It closes with the decree of Cyrus of Persia and parallels 1 and 2 Kings.
