  1. LIPIDS

    Slide 1 - LIPIDS

  2. Review:

    Slide 2 - Review:

    • Nucleic acids are made of monomers called nucleotides
    • Nucleic acids store and transmit genetic information
    • Carbohydrates are polymers made of monomers called simple sugars
    • Carbohydrates provide immediate energy for living things
    • The longer the carbohydrate chain, the longer-lasting the energy
  3. What is a Lipid?

    Slide 3 - What is a Lipid?

    • In some ways, lipids are like carbohydrates:
    • They are made the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen only
    • Many are used for energy
    • However, lipids are also different from carbs:
    • They are arranged into long straight chains (no rings)
    • They are NOT true polymers
    • They are used to STORE energy, hold in heat, and create protective coverings
  4. Structure of Lipids

Slide 4 - Structure of Lipids

    • Examples of lipids:
    • Fats and Oils (saturated animal fats, unsaturated oils)
    • Waxes (plant wax, earwax)
  5. Other Lipid Facts:

Slide 5 - Other Lipid Facts:

    • Fats are very high in calories
    • 1 g carbohydrate = 4 calories
    • 1 g of fat = 9 calories
    • Saturated (solid, animal) fats are dangerous because they can solidify in the blood vessels
    • Unsaturated (liquid, plant) fats may help with circulation or improve brain health (omega-3 fatty acids)
    • However, they are still high in calories
