Slide 3 Step 1: The Word Problem
 Every year, Josie counts the number of candy bars she gets in her Easter basket. However, this year she forgot to and she knows her little brother ate some! After several hours of denial, he finally admitted that he had eaten 5 candy bars. Josie counts her remaining candy bars and discovers she has 12 left. How many did she have before her brother ate some?

Slide 4 Step 2: Setting Up the Equation
 The unknown variable, or what we are trying to solve for, will be represented by x.
 In this scenario, we are trying to figure out how many candy bars Josie originally had in her basket. Therefore, X=total amount of candy bars.
 We know Josie has 12 left after the brother ate five. We can represent this in an equation like this:
 12=x5
 *This would translate in words to: “The number of candy bars that were originally in the basket, minus the five that Josie’s brother ate, equals 12.
