    Slide 11 - The Following is a paragraph from Wickersham’s 1900 Year Church History – Page 104)

    • “Another great event which marks the close of this period is the division and the decline of the Roman Empire. At this time almost half of the inhabitants of the Roman Empire professed faith in Christ. Christianity became the popular belief among the nations and money became the power. But instead of nations following the Lord, they denied the Biblical authority as Christ being the head of the church, and they injected a change, favoring bishops, who were given higher degrees of power and authority than they formerly possessed, and they assumed in many places a princely authority, particularly those of whom had the greatest number of churches under inspection and presided over the most wealthy congregations.
    • They assumed the authority of a temporal magistrate and dazzled the eyes of the multitude by wearing sumptuous clothing. The example of the bishops was neglecting the sacred duties of the spiritual phase of the work and to feed the flock spiritually, and boldly usurped their rights and privileges and effects of this corruptness spread through every rank of the church.
    • Paul, of Samosata, acting as bishop at Antioch prepared himself an exclusive seat or place where he decided cases as a magistrate. He attained to excessive wealth by means of the money for his services, depressing the injured and the poor, promising them aid in their troubles.
    • (others began to carry out the same type of business and this corrupt work spread and historically making the beginning of Popery at this time, which was 270 A.D.

    • The Age of the Apostasy
    • 250 A.D. – 540 A.D.
    • Revelation 13:1-9
  13. Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name. 2 Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. 3 And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast. 4 So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”

Slide 13 - Then I stood on the sand of the sea. • 5 And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue[c] for forty-two months. 6 Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. 7 It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe,[d] tongue, and nation. 8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
    • 9 If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints

  14. Emperor Constantine

    Slide 14 - Emperor Constantine

    • Constantine, Emperor of Rome about the year, 323 A.D. favored Christianity and opposed Pagan worship, mixing it with many pagan rites, thus developing the way for the papacy. When Constantine removed the seat of his empire from Rome to Constaninople in A.D. 330, the city of Rome was given up to the bishop of Rome. The bishop of Rome in 538 became the head of all the churches by the work of Justinian, the ruling emperor of the Romans. Thus Rome became the seat of the Papacy”. Croly on the Apocalyse. Pp. 114,155.
  15. More History Concerning this age:

Slide 15 - More History Concerning this age:

    • (Daniel Webster Kurtz’s History “Nineteen Centuries of Church History.” Page 46)
    • “The heresies within the church forced the Christians to a rule of authority. They sought for the true writings of the Apostles. A great flood of literature was read in the church attributed to the apostles. The process determining which was the true, and false work, lasted from A.D. 140 to A.D. 325. by the end of that year the agreement upon the matter was practically determined.
    • As the church entered the Greek and Roman territory and prevailed in conflict with Paganism, this heathenistic religion became more and more a matter of creeds.
    • During the apostolic age, elders and bishops, were of equal rank, or were the same persons, and there were several of these in each congregation. But now, bishops were exercising authority over others. This change was ordered by the Roman government which as they thought was a model, to all Gentile converts.
    • This was generally accepted all over, which developed the powers of popery.
    • According to historical facts and prophecy popery began to be promoted in a small measure as far back as 270 A. D., but was not fully developed in its complete working power until around 530 A.D.
    • What followed the Dragon in John’s vision was the Beast in Rev. 13:1, “the papal beast”. This represent popery, or papal Rome. He resembles his father the dragon, in that he also has seven heads and ten horns. The only difference is this, the dragon had his crowns on his heads, (Rev. 12:3), while the beast had his crowns on his horns.
  16. The First Church Building

Slide 16 - The First Church Building

    • When Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (reigned 306–337) ruled Rome, Christianity became the dominant religion of the Roman Empire. Historians remain uncertain about Constantine's reasons for favoring Christianity, and theologians and historians have argued about which form of Christianity he subscribed to. Although Constantine had been exposed to Christianity by his mother Helena, there is no consensus among scholars as to whether he adopted his mother's Christianity in his youth, or gradually over the course of his life, and he did not receive baptism until shortly before his death.

Slide 19 - The Appearance of the Beast

    • This beast had an appearance life a Leopard, which was spotted which represented as being sinful, feet life a bear, represented being a crushing power, and the mouth like a lion represented His devouring power. And such were Papal Rome. Anyone who stood in its way were crushed and devoured.

Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” – 1 Peter 5:1-5

  33. Selected Quote

    Slide 33 - Selected Quote

    • “Thus we have given a few quotations from the early writings to show how soon the humble equality of the apostolic government was overthrown and man exalted. This kept working more and more. The bishop was lifted up higher and higher, until about the third century; then a higher office was created. After that date we have a class of officers called archbishops—bishops over other bishops. Sometimes one bishop would rule over the bishops of a score of churches. This was forming the man of sin. In the church of God there is but one chief Shepherd, one chief Bishop—Christ— but at this date there was an exalting of man to this lofty position. This kept on working and fomenting {causing trouble}, man being exalted higher and higher until finally the pope was elected head of the church—so-called. Instead of Christ's working all in all, in all the members, man power-ruled the church.”

  36. The Rise of the False Prophet – Revelation 13:11-18

Slide 36 - The Rise of the False Prophet – Revelation 13:11-18

    • Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. 12 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 And he deceives those[e] who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or[f] the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
    • 18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666
