  1. Sedimentary Rocks

    Slide 1 - Sedimentary Rocks

    • Describe how sedimentary rocks are formed
    • Give places where sedimentation might be expected to occur
    • Explain why sedimentation might be expected to occur in these places
    • Describe the properties of sedimentary rocks
    • Terms: sedimentary, natural cement
    • List some common sedimentary rocks
    • Give some uses of sedimentary rocks
    • Terms: conglomerate, mudstone, sandstone, limestone, fossil, breccia, halite, gypsum, coal

    • Anywhere that the water which is carrying sediments suspended in it slows down.
    • When mountain rivers hit flatter ground, at bends in rivers, when rivers reach lakes and seas.

    Slide 3 - Sedimentary Rocks

    • Describe how sedimentary rocks are formed
    • Give places where sedimentation might be expected to occur

    • Because when moving water slows down, the suspended sediments can fall to the bottom. Turbulence is low when water moves slowly.

  5. Sedimentary Rocks

    Slide 5 - Sedimentary Rocks

    • Go to pearsonplaces and log on.
    • Find unit 8.3 Sedimentary Rocks
    • Scroll down past the picture of the Grand Canyon
    • Read the section headed…
  6. Sedimentary Rocks

    Slide 6 - Sedimentary Rocks

    • Put the heading “Sedimentary Rocks” in your notes.
    • Write a sentence that says basically what sedimentary rocks are.
    • Write a paragraph that explains the statement “Sedimentary rocks are classified by their types of sediment”
    • Then come back here.
  7. Sedimentary Rocks

    Slide 7 - Sedimentary Rocks

    • Go to pearsonplaces and log on.
    • Find unit 8.3 Sedimentary Rocks
    • Scroll down to the section shown here and read on until you get to “Chemical Sediments”
  8. Sedimentary Rocks

    Slide 8 - Sedimentary Rocks

    • Write a sentence that defines the term “clastic sedimentary rocks”.
    • Write a paragraph that explains what natural cements are, where they come from and how they are important in the formation of clastic sedimentary rocks.
    • Then come back here.
  9. Sedimentary Rocks

    Slide 9 - Sedimentary Rocks

    • Now you are going to skip a couple of sections.
    • Scroll down to the section shown here and read on until you get to the picture shown on the right below. Make sure you click the picture to see it bigger and clearer.
  10. Sedimentary Rocks

    Slide 10 - Sedimentary Rocks

    • Write a sentence that gives the general features of sedimentary rocks.
    • Write a paragraph that describes the characteristics of clastic sedimentary rocks.
    • Then come back here.
  11. Sedimentary Rocks

    Slide 11 - Sedimentary Rocks

    • Now you are going to skip a couple of sections.
    • Scroll down until you get to the section on “Uses of Sedimentary Rocks”. Read the whole section.
    • Construct a table that shows five types of sedimentary rocks, what they are used for, a picture of the rock and a suitable picture of what its used for. You may need to do a Google image search for some of these pictures.
    • I would like you to make sure you finish this for homework, if you don’t finish in class. If you do finish early, start having a read of section 8.1.
