Slide 1 - The Initial Rates Method(for working out the orders of a reaction)

    • Specification reference 3.4.1
  2. Learning Objective

    Slide 2 - Learning Objective

    • Be able to derive the rate equation for a reaction from data relating initial rate to the concentrations of different reactants.
  3. Finding the initial rate

Slide 3 - Finding the initial rate

    • Why the initial rate?
  4. Finding the initial rate

Slide 4 - Finding the initial rate

  5. Using the initial rates method

Slide 5 - Using the initial rates method

    • Set up a reaction and monitor the amount of reactant / product over time.
    • Repeat the experiment several times using different initial concentrations of reactants. Keep everything else constant.
    • Calculate the initial rate for each experiment by taking a tangent as above.
    • See how the initial concentrations affect the initial rates and figure out the order for each reactant.
  6. Learning Objective

    Slide 10 - Learning Objective

    • Be able to derive the rate equation for a reaction from data relating initial rate to the concentrations of different reactants.
