  1. 05.02 The Digestive System

    Slide 1 - 05.02 The Digestive System

    • By Jasmine F. and Aerin M.
  2. Digestive Tract

    Slide 2 - Digestive Tract

    • Mouth (Salivary Glands)
    • Pharynx
    • Esophagus
    • Stomach
    • Small Intestine
    • Large Intestine
    • Rectum
    • Anus
  3. Mouth

    Slide 3 - Mouth

    • Mechanical and Chemical Digestion
    • Mechanical digestion occurs when your teeth and tongue break down the food in your mouth.
    • Chemical digestion occurs when enzymes in your saliva break down the food into simpler molecules.
  4. PharynX

    Slide 4 - PharynX

  5. Esophagus

    Slide 5 - Esophagus

    • Peristalsis
    • A series of wavelike muscular contractions that allows food to travel through the digestive tract toward the stomach.
  6. STomach

    Slide 6 - STomach

    • When the stomach contracts, the organ churns and mixes the food (Mechanical Digestion)
    • Food in one’s stomach mixes with hydrochloric acid, pepsin, and mucus (Chemical Digestion)
    • After being digested in the stomach, solid food will turn into a thin liquid called chyme.
  7. Small Intestine

    Slide 7 - Small Intestine

    • Chemical digestion of proteins and carbohydrates
    • Absorption of fat, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids into the bloodstream
    • Chyme is mixed with a liquid called bile, as well as pancreatic and intestinal juices
  8. Large Intestine

    Slide 8 - Large Intestine

    • Where water and water-soluble vitamins are absorbed
    • Whatever is left, feces, is pushed out of the body through the rectum and out of the anus
  9. The Nervous system

Slide 9 - The Nervous system

    • Releases a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine
    • Allows smooth muscles to push and contract to allow food to move through the digestive tract
    • Causes the pancreas and stomach to produce digestive juices
    • Adrenaline
    • Relaxes the muscles
    • Decreases blood flow to organs during stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system
  10. The endocrine system

Slide 10 - The endocrine system

    • Gastrin
    • Causes stomach to produce acid that dissolves and digests food
    • Secretin
    • Causes pancreas to release bicarbonate (reduces acidity of chyme)
    • Stimulates stomach to produce pepsin
    • Stimulates liver to produce bile
    • Cholecystokinin
    • Allows bile to be released from gallbladder
    • Induces growth in pancreas
    • Generates enzymes in pancreatic juices
